Why, Arizona

Where State Routes 85 and 86 once met in a Y, and the town that grew there took the shape's name. The highway department straightened the crossing years ago; the Y is gone and the name stayed. The last count said a hundred and twenty-two people live in Why.

I went the only way I walk, through the camera. Cracked asphalt. A green sign pointing left to Lukeville and right to Ajo. Neither arrow says Why. A van parked in the dust.
